My first role was the drunk actress Gay Wellington in "You Can't Take It With You." I was 17. I had five lines. I was brilliant. This led to studying theatre at Humboldt State U in northern CA, then Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts studying voice, movement, and acting. I got my BFA in theatre from USC, then moved to NYC to study with Stella Adler for 3 years. I have appeared in regional theatre, Off-Broadway, Los Angeles Theatre, film, television and commercials for the past 38 years. I moved to Hawaii and worked as an actress sporadically, while taking up scuba diving. I had the opportunity to teach acting for film/television one semester at the University of Hawaii. I now live in the greater Philadelphia area to assist my mother. It's been a great ride so far - (and I actually got to re-enact the Gay Wellington in YCTIWY in NY)!
I act both on stage and screen and am available for voice-over acting. I also am thrilled to work on community-based theatre projects, employing actors to interview denizens of various communities, and putting on a show! This is a piece I wrote and performed from an interview in NY for a show called "Alphabet City".
Please see my resumé for the details of my experience and skills.
I'm performing a few pieces I wrote with an amazing writing group that met during the 2 year lockdown! SEPTEMBER 7, at COWGIRL in NYC.
For the last year, I have been coaching actors remotely. I also recently appeared in a three Zoom play readings based out of New York and worked on a Zoom film "The Big Pivot" which has won festival awards in Sweden, London, India and counting. I am a member of NY Women in Film & Television; The League of Professional Theatre Women; and NYC Women Filmmakers.
"I have booked the majority of my jobs after having Lisa Barnes as a coach. Her knowledge and decades of experience are invaluable and I still get coached by her to this day. Anyone would be lucky to work with her." - Kathleen Garrett (currently in Power book 2: Ghost on Starz, Inventing Anna soon to air on Netflix, The Trial of the Chicago 7 on Netflix, Billions on Showtime
"Lisa Barnes is an exceptionally gifted & truly luminous actor. She brings her many talents, plus her gracious & generous nature, to everything she does. If you ever have the chance to work with, be taught by or even just be in the same room with her, you'll forever after count yourself among the lucky. This woman is an utter rock star!"
- Natalie Douglas, Singer (Cabaret extraordinairess), Actress, Educator
"Lisa Barnes is an exceptional actor and coach! Her connection to material, both as an actor and as a guide of other actors, springs from a profound emotional intelligence. She gets to the meat of the matter in ways that always feel organic and honest. The results are always moving and satisfying. I've loved every opportunity I've had to work with her, and can't wait for the next project."
- Miles Phillips, Actor, Director, Vocalist, Writer
"For Lisa Barnes, performances are unmistakably the laying bare of a spirited heart. Following success in LA, Lisa brought her open heart to New York in the 1980s, where she began forging ties with many off-Broadway and regional theaters. Not the least notable, she was one of the five co-founders of Primary Stages in 1984. But in the early '90s, she found her way back to LA and joined the Pacific Resident Theatre as an actor, a producer, and a fundraiser. There, she received LA Drama Critic Circle Awards both as a Featured Actress and an Ensemble Member. Even so, New York drew her back in the aughts, and she has lived with a strong connection to both cities since. You may have been lucky enough to catch her in the past ten years at any of a number of indie and off-Broadway theatres, maybe in an episode of one of the Law and Order franchises or Rescue Me, or lately in any of various bars (for a site specific "Rye and Ginger"). If so, you have seen her unfold a character with tenderness and empathy, finding the human fragility in the toughest customers and the spirited fortitude in the most delicate. At Metropolitan Playhouse she has brought to the stage a single Dominican mother, a young Bangledeshi man, a Russian septuagenarian, the crusading Lillian Wald, and the indomitable Emma Goldman. It is striking enough that one person could play such diverse characters, of different ethnicities, ages, sexes, and values. Three of them, she created herself, based on interviews with residents of the East Village. But invariably, with an immersion in character that borders on possession, the portraits she created were deeply felt and fulfilled. I believe the secret to her eclectic portrayals is her diving under the skin to find the common humanity she shares with them, and riding that back to her arresting performance. There is a word for what she finds that connects them to her, and us all to one another: hope. In person and onstage, Lisa radiates, wrestles, curses-and-hugs-and-lives in hope. And in her performances, bringing the unseen to light, making the fictional real, finding that hope is like alchemy.
But if you can, get to see her in person, in private: on stage."
- Alex Roe, Artistic Director, Metropolitan Playhouse, NY
"Lisa Barnes' appearance in "The Wolves" as the victim's mom is the playwright's finest inspiration. The character is not needed, and the play could fulfill its intent and message entirely without her. But the contribution of that character and her ideal fulfillment in Lisa Barnes' portrayal is to reignite the play, setting it to a whole new level."
